Who are we

Why choose the surname of Etienne de La Boétie?

A little history: Etienne de La Boétie, humanist, in 1547 wrote, aged 17, "Discourse of Voluntary Servitude (french)". For him, human nature obeys three main principles:

  • Man, in his original nature, is not all that he is.
  • The naturalness of man is reasonable and universal reason.
  • There is no doubt that the nature of man is naturally to be free.

He proposes a theory of the essence of power. No longer wanting to serve, these are the conditions of freedom.

A great friend of Michel MONTAIGNE (french), this latter responded thus to the question of the friendship between himself and LA BOÉTIE : "because it was him, because it was me". We can read in MONTAIGNE's essays: "True freedom is to be able to do everything for oneself."

Our Logo and Our Slogan:

Butterflies symbolising freedom, "A safe and fulfilling education", we have represented them in the form of three bouquets. They represent the children socially connected with each other. We take up the theory of VYGOTSKY on socioconstructivism because it mainly explains that socialising affects the process of learning and cognitive development in an individual. Helping each other achieve and progress within our school, before confidently flying forth and continuing on.

In a nod to one of our pedagogical methods, maieutics, we chose to include the epsilon () in BOÉTIE; the translation of freedom in Greek being ἐλευθερία (eleuthería).
